InCopy CS4 – Keeping Up With InDesign CS4

InCopy CS4 – Keeping Up With InDesign CS4
With the release of Creative SuiteR 4 and the upgrade of InDesignR, one would expect matching upgrades to InCopyR, in order for the two programs to continue to smoothly work in conjunction. As you open InCopy CS4, you will see that it has the new interface upgrades, with the Application Bar and the Arrange Documents button and Workspace Switcher.

The Arrange Document button opens a menu of preset layouts for open documents within your workspace. You can choose many options from a side-by-side 2 up comparison layout, tiled documents and Consolidate All. The Workspace Switcher lets you quickly switch between task-based preset workspaces. Each workspace displays the most needed panels for a certain task such as editing tables. You will also notice the new tabs at the top of each open document. This new tab-based workspace makes it very easy to navigate between several open documents. Also as in InDesign, you can now rotate the canvas in 90 degree increments.

One upgrade to InDesign that is matched in InCopy is Conditional Text. This feature can save many hours of production time, as well as costs, by allowing you to create several versions of a project from one source document. Creating, editing and printing the various versions is as easy as turning on and off each condition. For example, you might want to toggle between versions of a product catalog where each version will display a different monetary denomination. You no longer need to use layers to display the monetary denominations in the same location inside the source document.

The Hyperlinks and Cross-Reference panels have been upgraded in both InDesign and InCopy. Tracking editing changes for cross-references in both programs is much easier. Converting text to hyperlinks to locations within the same document, external files or web address is much easier in the new Hyperlinks panel. Also, you can test the links from within InCopy. Another panel that has been upgraded is the Links panel. You now have a thumbnail graphic along with the file name, making it easier to identify the object of the link. It also displays information about notes, tracking and more.

Tables are very important for organizing data in any publication and being able to easily edit tables and keep track of changes is very important. InCopy now has the ability to edit in the Story and Galley view. You are no longer limited to the Layout view when editing tables. This makes it easier to see the design and layout of the table as you edit the text in the table cells. You can also create and store notes within table cells.

One upgrade specific to InCopy is the single-spread feature which allows you to turn off the facing pages option. You will also like the new Share my Screen feature that works with Adobe ConnnetNow. This is a new way to collaborate with team members who are in different locations. You can lead the online "meeting" from within InCopy and any changes made during the collaboration are tracked by InCopy.
