Red Squirrel Photos and Information

Red Squirrel Photos and Information
Most birders have a love-hate relationship with squirrels. I have to admit that the red ones are awfully cute and I enjoy feeding them!

The Tamiasciurus hudsonicus, also called pine squirrels or "chickaree", the red squirrel is smaller than its grey squirrel cousin. They are found in the eastern half of the US as well as in Canada. These small squirrels are actively harassed by grey squirrels and are very timid. In some areas they have been mostly driven out by the grey squirrel, but in others they have found ways to adapt.

Note that the Red squirrel of England - the Sciurus vulgaris - is also harassed by the grey squirrel and is near extinction.

Red squirrels definitely love suet, and will eat sunflower seeds as well. Cracked corn and other healthy snacks appeal to them as well.

They are quite the acrobat, able to hang out upside-down or sideways on a tree with no difficulty at all!
