The Common Raccoon is a nighttime creature that can wreak havoc on bird nests and birdhouses. Raccoons live in most of the US and Canada. They are medium sized animals that are best known for knocking over trash cans and making a mess.

Raccoons eat just about anything they can get their hands on, and unfortunately for birders this often means baby birds and eggs, as well as kittens and other small animals. If you put up bird houses, make sure you put them up high and have small holes so the raccoon paw can't fit in - and that the roof is tightly attached. Also, make sure that you keep your outside VERY clear of trash bags and any food substances. You don't want raccoons hanging around in general. If they stay away because you don't provide them with food, that means they won't be around to find the bird nests either.
