Police Virtual Paper Doll

It is amazing to think that as recently as 1970 only 2% of the police force was female! The first female police officers in the US were in the early 1900s, and these women were primarily brought in for "social services" types of roles. Even in modern times, the most up to date statistics I can find are that only 15% of police are female in the US. Little girls are encouraged to be ballerinas, and discouraged from being firefighters and police officers.

Back in the 1980s, the TV show Cagney and Lacey portrayed a pair of female police officers, tough and gritty. It was a hard sell for the audience at the time. However in modern times we do much better - in recent years we have had The Closer, Without a Trace, and Saving Grace to show us that women can be just as capable as men in the roles of law enforcement.
