Collaborative Between Artist and Hollywood

Alfred Hitchcock’s 1945 motion picture "Spellbound" is famous for Salvador Dali’s sleep sequence. Dali’s surrealist paintings were some of the most easily recognized in art. Dali was strongly influenced by film and so it was an important element in the evolution of the artist’s career.

Although the movie is primarily in black and white, there is one red flash on the screen when the trigger of a gun is pulled. The dream sequence begins in a gambling parlor with giant eyeballs and the furniture has human legs. Then a frame with a man holding giant scissors and still another of a faceless man (wearing a tux) holding a wheel. Dali used both futurism and surrealism.

Hitchcock was said to have used Dali because of "the architectural sharpness of his work," "long shadows, infinity of distance, converging lines of perspective."
The original dream scene lasted twenty minutes and was considered "a surrealist masterpiece."
