Kway! Cante Waste Nape Ciyu Zapo! (Greetings from my heart). Osiyo! Greeting to all tribes of the Nation. Wakan Tanan Kici Un (May The Great Spirit Bless You).
When sitting out on my back porch this morning I noticed how clear the sky was. I could see all the stars shining so brightly and twinkling as if to greet me. I sat there thinking of all the eons they have been looking down on Mother Earth and how they have over the centuries greeted all peoples, without prejudice or judgement. Then I got to thinking about how the ancients managed to use the stars and other heavenly planets to create their calendars and plan their celebrations, plantings of crops and other cultural tasks. Sometimes something like this is just too big for one mind to comprehend, so I just sat with my blanket over my shoulders and gazed at the beauty of it all till one by one, the stars began to disappear as the light of the Sun began to glow in the East.

With the weather turning colder, it is a good time to start baking all your family favorites.
When I was in high school I took a home economics class and one of my favorite recipes from the teacher was Popovers. I was fascinated the first time I made some and saw how high they had risen. Following is a slightly different recipe for some scrumptious Blackberry Popovers:
1 cup milk (soy milk can be used if you prefer)
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
2 TBSP melted butter
1/4 tsp salt
1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
1/4 cup sugar
1 cup sifted white flour
2 eggs, beaten
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1 cup blackberries (or berries of your choice)
Heat oven to 450, with rack in middle position.
In a large bowl, combine milk, vanilla, butter, salt and nutmeg with three tablespoons of the sugar. Add flour and mix. Stir in the beaten eggs and let stand while place one tablespoon sugar and the cinnamon in a cup, set aside then mix remaining ingredients in another bowl.
Spread berries in a buttered, nine inch pie plate. Pour batter over them, sprinkle top with the sugar/cinnamon mixture.
Bake for twenty minutes. Lower oven temp to 350 and continue baking for another 15 - 20 minutes until firm and golden brown. Cut into wedges and serve immediately with your favorite brew of hot coffee or tea.
