Many U.S. museums are choosing notable architects for their expansion programs.
The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston has a $500 million fundraising campaign underway, with Foster and Partners from the U.K. as their architects. Completion is expected in 2010.
The Museum of Modern Art in New York hired Japanese architect Yoshio Taniguchi to design their addition that opened last year.
The Milwaukee Art Museum saw an appreciable increase in attendance (43%) after a recent addition. (Not to mention pulling out of past debt of $30 million.) The internationally known designer of the wing was Calatrava, who has other U.S. projects to boast about. Namely, the Chicago Spire and Atlanta's Symphony Center. He is best known for his use of kinetics and folding architectural forms.
Bottom line: top architects build amazing, intriguing, beautiful buildings that draw the public's attention and hopefully increase museum attendance.
Think pyramids and you'll better understand the importance of a lasting structure that withstands time and public opinion.
