There is a huge amount of history to a lot of carols. The Holly And The Ivy is a song that may have originated centuries ago, and adjusted with the times. It has been suggested that in older songs, where holly and ivy were truly equal, the plants took on masculine (holly) and feminine (ivy) charateristics.
