"What matters to me are the details. They’re what make a film worth watching. Because there’s this widespread affliction among storytellers at the moment. You hear them say things like 'it’s a very effective scene, a very effective film'. But a film isn’t the same thing as a presentation or a speech, it’s an experience. I don’t want to be effective, I hate things being effective. I don’t watch "Leviathan" for example thinking 'go on then, get to the point'. Saleh's film "The Nile Hilton Incident", which is the subject of this week's review, is frequently described as atmospheric and moody. The attention Saleh and his crew pay to details is what gives the film its special quality. I was especially pleased that he mentioned Andrey Zvyagintsev's "Leviathan" in the above quote. Zvyagintsev is one of my favorite directors (you can read my review of "Leviathan" on the Drama Movies site). What these two films have in common is an exploration of corruption and authoritarian societies and the route an individual takes in fighting against the system.

Zvyagintsev has a new film, "Loveless", which won a Jury Prize at this year's Cannes film festival. It is Russia's official entry for the Academy Awards and considered one of the frontrunners in the Foreign Language category. The story concerns a couple in the midst of a bitter divorce and what happens when their neglected child goes missing. "Loveless" has a US distribution deal but no word yet on when the film will be in theaters.

MoviePass, a subscription service for theater tickets, is creating some waves in the industry. Cinemark just announced a monthly movie membership program for its theaters today. The Netflix model makes sense for frequent moviegoers. If theater owners can swing a profit on such a system, MoviePass will be here to stay.
