“With No Studios, we want to create a place where people can socialize with purpose and go about the hard work that’s at the core of creativity, as well as come together and celebrate art. Our goal is to make the space itself, and Milwaukee by extension, a destination for artists, artisans and patrons from across the country, and around the world.” Filmmaker John Ridley
Exciting news for those of us in the Midwest. John Ridley, who wrote the Oscar-winning adapted screenplay "12 Years a Slave", is redeveloping a building in Milwaukee as a complex for artists and filmmakers. The space will be home to Milwaukee Film, which operates the Milwaukee Film Festival, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Film School. There will also be a post-production facility, a 50-seat screening room, and art galleries. No Studios opens in September with a series of film screenings, discussions, and performances. It is great that Ridley, a Milwaukee native, is giving back to the community and nurturing local talent.
Laurent Tirard, the director of "Up for Love", studied filmmaking in New York. He eventually returned to his homeland, France, to begin his career but retained his love of American film. Commenting on "Up for Love", Tirard stated, "I was inspired by Capra, because he too flirted with fairy tales and he had a kindly view of people. He never showed any wickedness, just a lot of humanity." Jean Dujardin, the star of "Up for Love", also plays the lead in Tirard's most recent film "Return of the Hero". No US release date yet, but the trailer is online.
