Heavy Metal / Hard Rock

March 25 2007 Heavy Metal / Hard Rock Newsletter

Here's the latest article from the Heavy Metal / Hard Rock site at BellaOnline.com.

Hello everybody,

Hope you’re enjoying the warmer weather. Don’t know about my American friends but up here in Canada --- or rather specifically Ontario, we’ve just seen the sun come out and melt some snow. I still have a two foot bank by the driveway that I’m waiting to see disappear however.

What a great time for hard rock metal. Have you heard the new Sabbath tracks? While they can never equal the dark majesty of the Heaven and Hell era, they’re still pretty darn good. I’m going to see them in Ottawa this week so hopefully, next newsletter I can tell you how it went.

I’m particularly looking forward to seeing Megadeth who are opening the show. I was never a fan in the old days. I heard a couple of early songs and was not impressed so I never bothered checking them out after that. I received an advance for their new record “United Abominations” last week and was blown away. To be honest, I thought it was just OK at first upon casual listening. Once I sat down and really give it a good go, I was really surprised at how good it was. The version of “A Tout Le Monde” is excellent, really powered by the vocals of Lacuna Coil singer, Christina Scabbia.

Then I had the extreme pleasure of speaking with Megadeth leader Dave Mustaine later in the week for a magazine piece. Dave was probably the best interviewee I’ve ever had. He was funny, interesting and best of all, came across as very sincere. Hit me up for the interview transcription, if you’re interested. Unless you’re from Canada, then go buy a copy of the May issue of Caustic Truths you rascals (www.caustictruths.com).

I’ve posted a couple of things on the site since the last newsletter. Probably the thing I’m most excited about is the latest St. Madness CD, “Vampires in the Church”. If you like Sabbath, then you’ll probably like these guys. After writing the review, I just found out the singer just conquered testicular cancer in 2005 and after surgery and chemo sessions, started writing this new record. Big props to him indeed.

While you’re on the site, you can check out some other reviews I did of Valient Thorr, Imperial, and others.

If you want even more metal, check out recent interviews I did at my other website:
http://www.rocknworld.com/morley/
There you can hear from Nekromantix, Bernie Tormé of GMT (whose record I reviewed on this site a month or so ago), Paul Allender from Cradle of Filth, and new-ish LA band Echoes of Eternity, among others.

On the slate for the next month or so are coming interviews with Tommy Shaw of Styx, Don Brewer of Grand Funk, Paul Rodgers (ex of Bad Company), Steve Morse, legendary guitarist Dick Wagner (who used to play with Alice Cooper during the “Welcome to My Nightmare” days), 3 Miles Scream, Poison the Well, Visions of Atlantis, Frank Zappa’s wife Gail, Bif Naked (again)….as well as a childhood idol, David Cassidy --- stop laughing.
