Hello again. Hope all of you are seeing the beginnings of Spring coming your way. Here in Northern Nevada it is finally warming up and the days have been very pleasant. It still gets pretty cold at night, but the mornings are delightful!
You should really check out all the hot topics that are circulating in our forums. One topic brought up was "What would you do?" to make a better world? Most people are focusing on how to bring about world-wide peace and what they would do to get that started. There are many other topics, issues and subjects to comment on - so, grab a cup of coffee, hot chocolate, tea or whatever, sit a spell and join us in the conversations. You are most welcome to add your thoughts and opinions.
My latest article is "Native American Women In History". For me this is a fascinating subject because there are and were some very amazing and talented women who left us positive legacies and hope for a better world, not only for their own peoples, but for everyone. Check it out. You are free to comment and let me know what you think. I welcome all feedback. My web site link is below, under my name.
Do you have any special traveling plans coming up? Check out the PowWow listings in my forum to see if there will be one in the areas you plan to visit. PowWows are a great event to attend and the dancers and regalia are really quite amazing. Don't forget that PowWows, as with any event, have rules and proper etiquette guidelines. The most important thing to remember is 'Respect' - always respect others and the event will be that much more pleasant for you. Each PowWow or event will have its own special rules, so look into it or ask someone what they are so you will be aware of what is expected of you. And above all - have fun!
I have another 'Blue Corn' recipe for you. Scones! They are a wonderful treat to have with that coffee or tea you love to dwell over in a quiet conversation with a close friend:
Blue Corn Scones:
1/2 cup blue corn meal
1 3/4 cup all purpose flour
1/3 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 # butter, chilled
1/4 cup light brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 cup milk
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease & flour your cookie sheet. Mix and blend all dry ingredients in a large bowl, cut the butter in with a pastry cutter (I usually use two knives and crisscross back and forth). When mixture is like course corn meal, beat your egg, milk, sugar, and vanilla till smooth. Stir this mixture in with the flour mix and briefly knead on floured board. Take a small amount of dough (flour your hands a little first) and pat into the size circle you prefer then put on the cookie sheet. You can make individual scones in the shape you want or make one large circle and mark into wedges with a knife. Bake 15 or 20 minutes or until golden brown. Serve with whatever toppings you prefer (I like just a little butter on the warm scone, or jam when they are cold). Cream cheese is another favorite topping of mine. You can blend some chives or other herbs in to the cream cheese if you have a mind to - be creative!
Scones are also a great thing to take along with you if you will be traveling. They make a quick and delightful snack treat! Store them inside a tin lined with wax paper and that will keep them from drying out and they will retain their flavor longer. For some reason I am not aware of, scones always make me feel cozy and loved. I just feel good when having a scone with my tea. Do you have a special food that makes you feel that way? One that brings back good memories? Do you have the recipe for it? If not, let me know and I will try to find it for you.
Till next time....
Walk in peace and blessings to you,
Phyllis D. Burns
