The greatest playwright in history shuffled off this mortal coil on his 52nd birthday: April 23, 1616.
Some – he wrote in Twelfth Night – are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon ’em. He was himself in the middle group.
So in 2016, exactly 400 years on, this eventful day still arouses excitement in all corners of the world. But exactly what merit lived in Shakespeare, anyway, that we should love after his death?
