In 1947, adventurer Thor Heyerdahl achieved his goal of sailing the raft Kon-Tiki from Peru to Polynesia but his first marriage did not survive the experience.

Heyerdahl took only two pieces of modern equipment on his journey - a radio and a small movie camera. He assembled the footage into the documentary "Kon-Tiki", which won an Academy Award in 1951. The feature film I review this week is a modern re-creation of Heyerdahl's early life and his historic voyage. It is the first Norwegian film to be nominated for both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award.


The summer movie season is almost upon us. While there are many big-budget action pictures scheduled for release, there will also be a few films for drama fans to enjoy. Kristen Wiig tackles a serious role in "Welcome to Me". She plays a television host with borderline personality disorder. In July, Jake Gyllenhaal hits the screen with his boxing drama "Southpaw". Meryl Streep also has a new film in which she plays an aging rock goddess, "Ricki and the Flash".
