Here's this week's article from the Native American site at BellaOnline.com.

What is in a Name?
As a child, I longed for an “Indian” Name. As an adult, I long for my “Natural” Name, the one which provides recognition of my connection. A name is not a constant, but it does have power. As we grow and change, so can our name.

When all my cousins gathered at our Grandparent’s house, we played “Indians.” Apparently, nobody wanted to be a Cowboy. I’m sure some of my cousins also thought of having an Indian name at some point. They can be so adventurous, mystical, and even romantic sounding. It was more the allure of being someone else with an exotic name, an escape from myself. I could not have been any further from the truth.

One’s “Natural” name is a reflection of the true self and a source of power. It represents, connects, and inspires. I’ll be hitting the Half Century mark pretty shortly and have been reflecting on the journey thus far. What is in my name?

As the summer comes to an end, the Fall Pow Wow season is gearing up. Children will be returning to school soon, and some are probably dreading it. Attending an Indian gathering can be a good way to remind our youth of the joy and excitement in learning new things. Stop by Pow-Wows and Events on the website for listings in your area and join us in the forum to share your experience. We look forward to new posts and topics.
