Special Career Tip of the Week:

This week, start preparing for your next job or promotion by starting an EGO FILE. What's that, you ask? It's simple...just a file of information about "you". If you get kudos in an email from your boss, print it out, and place the email message in your file. If you get a thank you note from a client, put that in the file, too. Did you attend a training session? Put a copy of the brochure in your file as well. Did you type up a great report for a class? Put a copy of that in your file. Did you get an evaluation on a speech you did for work or school? Copy the evaluation, and place that in your file, too. Maybe you designed a great visual display...you could take a picture of it, and put the photo in your file. You'll be amazed at how quickly this type of stuff piles up.

Then, the next time you are looking for a job, vying for a promotion, or just needing an uplifting experience...pull out your Ego File and skim through it. You can create a great "portfolio" with this information. You can also use the information to make a great "case" about why you deserve a raise. Your file could be anything from a simple file folder, to a cheap paper folder, or even an old shoebox. The point is that you get in the habit of keeping a "record" of the great things you are doing, so that you have real information to share when you need it.
