CAREER TIP:
Do you belong to a professional association? These are great organizations that can provide you with news about what's happening in your profession, job announcements, opportunities to network, perhaps scholarship opportunities, and more.

Ask around, and find out which group your colleagues, bosses, and mentors belong to. If you can't quite afford the cost for membership, then ask your boss to consider paying for it. A good time to ask about this is either: a) while you are negotiating your salary & benefits before you actually start a new job, or 2) during a performance evaluation. Of course, you can always ask during a special meeting. Regardless of when you ask your boss to help pay, be prepared to tell your boss how he/she (and your department/company) will benefit because of your membership. If your boss simply cannot pay, see if he/she is already a member of the group. Perhaps you could tag along as his or her guest, and perhaps they would share journals & newsletters with you.
