This past weekend I have enjoyed another wonderful treat at the Palmettos Tatters Guild annual Tat Days 2013. I will share more about that trip soon. Meanwhile I continue my study on the history of tatting. Recently I have been looking at Roll tatting. I have posted a tutorial on it here at BellaOnline.com. Over the years I have spoken with other tatters about this and these are my notes so far.

There is pattern with a roll tatted edging published in 1916 (possibly from a Home Needlework Magazine) which was reprinted in an issue of "Olde Time Needlework" 1980? 1962? pages 4 and 5 when Myrtle Hamilton may have been the tatting editor. Page 5 has 6 patterns among which is one named "Ivy Leaf." This is truly a beautiful pattern and great example of the use of roll tatting.

Mary Fitch's #6 book on Tatting published in 1916 has roll tatting patterns on pages 5, 6 and 16.

There is a note on the instructions for roll tatting by a Mrs. B. M. J. of New Hampshire published in the Needlecraft Magazine of 1916. A similar explanation was published by Needlecraft Magazine page 25 in June 1919 in response to a question from Mrs. J. B. S. of Rhode Island.

The Priscilla Tatting Book #3 published in 1924 has the same Ivy Leaf pattern with instructions on pages 24-25.

More recently roll tatting instructions appeared in Rebecca Jones' "The Complete Book of Tatting" 1985 on page 58.

Mary Konior shows roll tatting in her books "Tatting Patterns" 1989 and "Tatting with Visual Patterns" 1992

And I am seeking the source of this quotation:
"Those who do shuttle-work will welcome this novel method of developing new patterns or copying old ones. Practically any design can be made of it, although some are more suitable than others..."

I received information that "Radio Crochet" is the name of a crocheted doily simply intended for the top of the antique floor model radios. It may have been published in Needlecraft Magazines but I have not located it yet.

Also, I have not found any more patterns listed as "plastron."
