Spiral Jetty Resurfaces
By definition, a jetty is "a wall that restrains water." In the case of "Spiral Jetty" it is strictly artistic and non-functional. Built by Robert Smithson in 1970, it is considered Environmental Art or Earthwork. It was constructed of 1,500 feet of earth and black basalt and is located at the northern edge of Great Salt Lake in Utah. Soon after its completion, it was covered by high water and has remained hidden.
But now, due to the drought in the West, the Spiral Jetty has reappeared. From an aerial view, it is a site to behold. Despite its being submerged for over thirty years, it has not shown much damage. The "triple loop" of the spiral is still well defined against the pink lake water and the brown mountains beyond. Smithson had intended for the jetty to integrate with the lake’s water, mud, salt, and rocks. It appears that his wish has come true.
