Sewing

January 11 2008 Sewing Newsletter

Sewing is as much artistry and philosophy as it is frugal economics. Sewing teaches us and allows us to nourish our creativity. Sewing allows us a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence by utilizing design elements and sewing techniques successfully. We come to an understanding of textile fibers and fabrics as we apply this knowledge in choosing, buying, or making clothing or household items. We can come to know the value in diversity in textile and clothing design and its relationship to cultural or ethnic heritages. We come to understand the value of historic costume and textiles. We acquire many sewing skills from the embellishment processes such as dyeing, printing, quilting, embossing, or embroidery. We learn evaluative skills through our sewing experiences and do pass them on to others in service and education.

Here's the latest article from the Sewing site at BellaOnline.com.

Napped Fabrics
A fabric with "nap" has gone through a manufacturing finishing process that raises the fiber ends to the surface where they are then shorn, brushed or simply left upright. This creates a sculpted surface texture for the fabric and unique opportunities for the sewer´s creative imagination.
