10 Amazing Facts about Mercury
Mercury was a mystery planet for a long time. It's so close to the Sun it's only visible around sunrise and sunset, and the Sun's glare wipes out surface detail. Space probes have now studied Mercury, and it turned out to be full of surprises.

April 11, 1960: Project Ozma started. It used a radio telescope to hunt for radio signals of intelligent aliens. One of the stars they monitored was Epsilon Eridani, about which I wrote last week:
April 12, 1961: Yuri Gagarin was the first human to orbit the Earth. April 12 is now Yuri's Night on which the World Space Party is held. The film “First Orbit” recreates the historic flight.
