I've been watching a lot of history documentaries on YouTube of late. (I needed something to occupy my mind while knitting a particularly boring baby blanket.) My, how history has changed since I was in school! For instance, civilizations have come and gone for far longer than the 6000 years I memorized for a test all those years ago: 30-40,000 years and still counting back!
Also, there have been a constant series of natural catastrophes as far back as 3+billion years--many of which seem to have caused mass extinctions--and several that wiped out some fairly sophisticated civilizations far older than the Egyptian pyramids. Geology is all about change, it would appear, although the time frame is rather longer than the average human life. (The first time you read about plate tectonics, didn't you want to rush outside and watch??)
What is interesting to me about all this new history is that religion and folk tales have been telling us stuff like that forever. They all have references to floods and earthquakes and other disasters, and now science is discovering there might be some truth in them. So, I wondered what the Bahá'í Faith might have to say about how old creation is, or how long humans have been receiving guidance from their Creator.
Here's some of what I found out in the latest article from the Baha'i site at BellaOnline.com.
Lost Civilizations, or, How Old Is Creation ?
What do the teachings of the Bahá'í Faith have to say about ancient civilizations and the age of the Universe?
