May 17 2008 Canadian Culture Newsletter

This is your weekly update from the Canadian Culture page at BellaOnline. My name is Melanie Hachey and I am the new editor. You can learn a little bit more about me here.

This week's article is about The Bay of Fundy. The Bay of Fundy is an amazing attraction, well worth a visit for anyone interested in hiking, kayaking, ocean wildlife, eco-tourism, adventure tourism or beautiful scenery.

Visit the Canadian Culture Forum, where you can join the discussion about funny Canadians, tell us what you like to do on vacation, or share your favourite Canadian treat. The forum is a great place to share any comments, questions, or thoughts about Canada, its people, and its culture.

This Week's Canadian Fun Fact

Did you know that Tommy Douglas was voted the Greatest Canadian? In 2004, the CBC held an Idol-style show (except without the singing) for famous Canadians. Canada's most popular current and historical personalities were nominated and narrowed down to a top ten. The top ten's stories were told and defended by various advocates on CBC television, and then the Canadian public voted for who they thought was the greatest. Tommy Douglas, who was responsible for coming up with Canada's universal health care system, won out over all others (including Terry Fox, hockey announcer Don Cherry, and Wayne Gretzky) to get top spot as the Greatest Canadian.

What's Up Canuck? Your Weekly Canadian Trivia Question

Last Week's Question & Answer:

What is Canada's favourite hockey team?

According to, 40% of Canadians voted for the Montreal Canadiens as their favourite hockey team on a Canadian Press Harris/Decima survey. The Habs were followed by the Toronto Maple Leafs with 24% of the vote. I know hockey can be a touchy subject and many Canadians are not going to agree that the Montreal Canadiens are Canada's favourite team... If you don't agree, feel free to voice your opinion in the forum.

Do you have a question about Canada? Email me, or post it in the forum, and I might use it as the What's Up Canuck trivia question.
