The makers of "Colosio the Assassination" had to be persistent in order to bring their story, a re-creation of the events surrounding the murder of presidential candidate Luis Colosio, to the screen. The film portrays both fictional and real-life characters. The DVD has a chart, which gives a short biography of all the characters in the film. You don't have to be familiar with Mexican politics to enjoy the movie, but the background info gives extra meaning to the film.

One of the fictional characters portrayed is a journalist, played by Mexican actress Kate del Castillo. Her role in the film is important, but quite small. She is better known for her lead role in the telenovela "La Reina del Sur" ("Queen of the South"). The telenovela is based on the novel by Arturo Perez-Reverte, which is a book I have read and recommend. Unlike "Colosio the Assassination", "Queen of the South" focuses exclusively on the world of drug-trafficking.

Moving back to American films, Denzel Washington has reason to celebrate this week. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced that he will receive the 2016 Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes on Jan. 10th. The honor is a lifetime achievement award for those who have made significant contributions to the entertainment industry. Washington has already won two Golden Globes, for his roles in "Glory" (1989) and "The Hurricane" (1999). In an upcoming project, he will be directing the film version of the play "Fences".
