Actor Omar Sharif
Sharif is referencing his beautiful film "Monsieur Ibrahim" (2003) in the above quote. He plays a Muslim shopkeeper who befriends a lonely Jewish boy. The DVD for "Monsieur Ibrahim" also has Sharif doing commentary and it is one of my favorites. He free-associates about whatever comes into his mind, talking about his early career, the women's liberation movement, and his reputation as a ladies' man. He also explains his reason for making the film - "for love". I went back to an earlier film for this week's featured review but if you are in the mood for a quiet, reflective film - then I suggest "Monsieur Ibrahim".
I just watched the trailer for Chloe Zhao's "The Rider", which Sony Pictures Classics will release in April. "The Rider" has received four nominations from the Film Independent Spirit Awards and numerous accolades from the various festivals where it has screened. Also, Andrey Zvyagintsev's "Loveless", which is one of the Academy Award Foreign Language nominees, was released on the East and West coasts over the weekend. I've reviewed two of his films on the Drama Movies site and look forward to viewing his latest work. You can also watch a clip from "Loveless" online.
