"I hate violence, and I think that violence is meaningful if you see the impact of violence on victims. I'm interested on the impact, I'm not interested in the show. I don't want to make a show of violence. I mean, I've been in contact with people who suffered from the trauma of war... When I use violence in a movie it's just to express the power, the impact of it." Director Denis Villeneuve
Canadian Denis Villeneuve directed this week's featured film, "Sicario". In keeping with the philosophy he expresses in the above quote, most of the violence happens off-screen. His next project, "Story of Your Life", is a sci-fi thriller starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker. It will be in theaters sometime in 2016.
It is Villeneuve's 2018 film that I am looking forward to with great anticipation. He is directing the sequel to Ridley Scott's 1982 classic, "Blade Runner". The film is in pre-production and Harrison Ford is set to reprise his role as Rick Deckard. Accomplished cinematographer Roger Deakins, who worked with Villeneuve on "Sicario", will be in charge of the visuals.
Taylor Sheridan, the screenwriter of "Sicario", initially made his living in front of the camera. He has appeared in series such as "Sons of Anarchy" and "Veronica Mars". It appears that his ultimate goal is working behind the camera, however. His next screen credit will be as the writer of "Comancheria", a crime drama starring Jeff Bridges. He is also working on "Wind River", starring Elizabeth Olsen and Jeremy Renner. He wrote the screenplay and will be directing, as well.
Turning to more female-centered drama, there is a new project starring Kirsten Dunst, Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monae in the the works. Called "Hidden Figures", the film tells the story of four African-American women who worked at NASA. They were mathematicians who helped make possible NASA's successful missions in space. Kevin Costner also stars, with Ted Melfi directing.
