Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar will be the Jury President for the 70th annual Cannes Film Festival, which runs May 17th-28th. The selections for the world's most glamorous film festival will be announced on April 13th, but journalists are already speculating about the likely contenders. Sofia Coppola's remake of "The Beguiled", starring Kirsten Dunst, Nicole Kidman, and Colin Farrell, is seen as a likely entry. The film premieres in the US on June 30th. "Kings", written and directed by Deniz Gamze Erguvan ("Mustang"), is also a buzzed-about film. It stars Daniel Craig and Halle Berry as Los Angeles residents in the weeks just before the Rodney King-related riots in 1992.

Of course, this French festival also has a number of native films as likely entrants. "Rodin", written and directed by Jacques Doillon, is set to be released in French theaters on May 24th and will possibly use Cannes as a launching point. Produced to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Rodin's death, the biopic stars Vincent Lindon ("The Measure of a Man"). A 30-second teaser was recently released online. I'll be keeping an eye on what transpires at this year's festival, and let you know which films will be making their way to the US.
