"The greatest felony in the news business today is to be behind, or to miss a big story. So speed and quantity substitute for thoroughness and quality, for accuracy and context." Journalist Carl Bernstein
The investigative reporters portrayed in "Spotlight" worked for nearly a year, researching sex abuse in the Catholic Church, before they published their findings in "The Boston Globe". That kind of thoroughness and quality is what Carl Bernstein feels is lacking in journalism today. The "Spotlight" DVD has a featurette titled "The State of Journalism". In it, director Tom McCarthy highlights the fact that the "Globe" has downsized its pool of reporters. Is the type of journalism practiced by the Spotlight team no longer viable in the Internet age?
Actor Michael Keaton, who portrays Spotlight editor Walter Robinson, is experiencing, as a critic in "Film Comment" called it, a bona fide career renaissance. His next release is the biopic "The Founder", set for an August, 2016 release date. Keaton plays McDonald's founder Ray Kroc. A sequel to "Bettlejuice" is also in pre-production, reuniting Keaton with director Tim Burton.
For fans of 1970s classics such as "Serpico", "Dog Day Afternoon", "Network", and "The Offence", a new documentary is of interest. "By Sidney Lumet" features a long interview with the celebrated director, filmed before his death in 2011. The documentary also contains clips from 44 films directed by Lumet, which often explore the type of moral and ethical questions that are at the heart of "Spotlight" "By Sidney Lumet" will be screened at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 22nd.
