"The mobile camera moves into the scene and brings depth to the flat image, gives movement and drama to setting and architecture, and draws the audience into the world on screen."
Ira Konigsberg from "The Complete Film Dictionary"
The camera is capable of an infinite variety of shots and movements. How a filmmaker uses the camera determines the look and tone of her work. I explore the topic of camera movement in this week's featured article. I was influenced to do so by the current state of television production. Watching the news broadcasts and interview shows that are produced using Skype and Zoom, with people parked in front of their computer screens, has only increased my appreciation of the mobile camera.
Regular readers of the Drama Movies site know that I also have an appreciation for Australian films. This past week, I screened "The Good Wife" starring Rachel Ward, Bryan Brown, and Sam Neill. It was released in 1987, which is when I first saw it in a theater. There were about ten of us in the audience when the film began and only two of us left when the final credits scrolled. I've decided that marketing is partly to blame. The theatrical trailer for "The Good Wife" is edited to make the film look like an erotic thiller, which it definitely is not. What director Ken Cameron delivers is a female-centered drama in which social conditions and environment thwart the emotional life of its protagonist. It was worth revisiting.
For her performance, Rachel Ward won the 1987 Best Actress Award at the Tokyo International Film Festival. All major film festivals for this year, however, have been cancelled due to the pandemic. In response, festival organizers are moving online. The biggest event will take place beginning May 29th. "We Are One: A Global Film Festival" will screen for free on YouTube. The list of film titles will be announced shortly. Follow #WeAreOne on Twitter for updates. You can also follow my Twitter feed - AngelaKPeterso1. Stay well!
