"In light of what we see happening around us — Brexit, the new US government or the rise of populism — I think that we could do with leaders like Haakon VII today. He was a man for whom honour and sense of duty were more than just nice words; he was committed to preserving democracy even if it cost him his life. He made an enormous sacrifice, and that’s one aspect of the film that audiences have been particularly moved by." Erik Poppe on his film "The King's Choice"
"The King's Choice" opens with archival footage of King Haakon VII from the years 1905 to 1940. The transition from the archival footage of the King to the actor who plays him in the film is seamless, as Jesper Christensen bears an uncanny resemblance to Haakon VII. Christensen, who played Mr. White in three Bond films, does a wonderful job portraying the complex emotions of a man who wants to protect him family but also make the right decision for his country.
The relationship between father and son is an important element of "The King's Choice". Haakon's son, Prince Olav, is played by Anders Baasmo Christiansen. He had roles in "Kon-Tiki" and "In Order of Disappearance", two films I have previously reviewed on the Drama Movies site. Olav has a different temperament than his father, but the love and respect they feel for each other is evident.
The Cannes Film Festival opens this Tuesday, May 8th. Valeria Golino has directed a new film, "Euphoria", which will screen as part of the director's fortnight (Un Certain Regard). I was impressed with Golino's debut feature "Honey" (reviewed on the Drama Movies site) and she works with some of the same crew in this new film. "Euphoria" is a character-driven drama about two brothers with very different personalities. The film does not have a US distribution deal yet, but that may change after its premiere.

The King's Choice Film Review
When Germany invades Norway in 1940, the King is faced with a choice. Abandon his country to the enemy or make a stand in defense of democracy. A critical and commercial success for filmmaker Erik Poppe.
