This is the reason I initially deferred writing about Errol Flynn on this site. Flynn was addicted to sex and drugs and I certainly don't condone his off-screen behavior. However, he remains one of my favorite actors. Flynn did not take control of his career the way his Warner Brothers co-stars Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland did. As a result, he appeared in quite a few clinkers but the mediocre films are watchable because of his offhand charm and mellifluous voice.

Biographer Charles Higham seemed to bear a personal grudge against Flynn. After accusing the deceased actor of being a Nazi Spy in "The Untold Story", he continued to defame Flynn in his biographies of Cary Grant, Orson Welles, and Olivia de Havilland. Welles called Higham "unspeakable" for the number of lies he published while de Havilland decried the negative thoughts Higham attributed to her. Flynn often felt used by the celebrity media machine and Higham continued the abuse after Flynn's death. Journalist and film historian Tony Thomas provides the antidote.
