"The technology is always an element of creativity, but it never is the source of the creativity and so my attitude is to embrace technology as it comes."
Director Francis Ford Coppola
Most of the directors and cinematographers interviewed in the documentary "Side by Side" agree with Coppola's viewpoint concerning digital technology. There are a few directors, like Christopher Nolan, who continue to prefer the image captured on photochemical film. One professional, who continues to shoot on film, says "I'm not going to trade my oil paints for a set of crayons."
Camera manufacturers have halted production of motion picture cameras that use film, and there was a danger that film stock would no longer be produced. A group of filmmakers, including Quentin Tarantino, pressured Kodak to continue making film stock. That lobbying effort worked, and in February, Kodak announced an agreement to continue supplying film stock to the major studios.
In "Side by Side", a number of people talk about the texture of film and that it somehow feels more real than digital. I also prefer the filmed image as opposed to the digital image, which seems too much like a video game for me.
Does it matter if we lose film? You can add your thoughts to my recent post on the forum, discussing Quentin Tarantino's decision to release his next film using both formats, photochemical film and digital.
