"If you see a documentary, you are shocked but you don't cry because it's a documentary. If it's a movie, you become me. Or your husband can say, you see, darling, it's me. And then you can cry. It's another way of showing what is happening in our world at that time, on this day in this year. I think movies are very important when they can jump from the culture pages to the society pages, when they are a kind of witness." Actor Vincent Lindon
Lindon has made a number of what he calls "social dramas" which portray working-class characters trying to survive in the era of globalization/neo-liberalism. An example is his latest film "En guerre" ("At War"), his fourth collaboration with director Stephane Brize. "En Guerre" uses Lindon and a group of non-professional actors to portray factory workers fighting the closure of their plant, which happens after they agree to a pay cut. The film was released in France following its premiere at Cannes but as yet, no one has picked up the film for distribution in the US.
The reality of class differences is more openly portrayed in French mainstream features as compared to American films, demonstrated by two films I watched recently. "All Our Desires", which co-stars Lindon, is the subject of my latest review. "My Piece of the Pie" is a more caustic film that critiques the massive income inequality that exists in France (and elsewhere). Karin Viard stars as a laid-off factory worker. She finds work cleaning the luxury apartment of the bond trader responsible for destroying her company. While director Cedric Klapisch sometimes uses a heavy hand to get his point across, I found the film relevant and unsettling.
