"If I can say one thing for my pictures, it is a certain craftsmanship. A thought which has gone into every angle. There is nothing there without an optical reason." Director Douglas Sirk

Andrey Zvyagintsev is also a director who pays attention to every detail in the frame. "Leviathan" is beautiful to watch, although the story is on the dark side. It is not without its touches of humor. however. There is a scene in which the main characters go on a shooting party. Their first target is a series of bottles. Then someone brings out framed photographs of Russian leaders, including Lenin, Yeltsin, Brezhnev and Gorbachev. Zvyagintsev doesn't actually show the photos being shot full of holes, merely suggests it. Apparently there are some lines that Russian artists are unable to cross.

Universal Pictures is having its best year ever in terms of global box office receipts. They have already earned nearly 4 billion dollars and still have six months to go. Their success is mainly due to "Furious 7" and "Jurassic World". "Jurassic World" has earned 1 billion dollars worldwide faster than any other film in history.

For movie-goers still interested in dramatic films, there was an interesting announcement today. "The Downslope", a screenplay written by Stanley Kubrick in 1956, is now being developed into a feature film trilogy. The first film is to be directed and produced by Marc Forster. Forster has directed such diverse films as "Monster's Ball", "Finding Neverland" and "Quantum of Solace". The story begins during the American Civil War, focusing on a series of battles between Gen. George Custer and the Confederate Colonel John Singleton Mosby. The screenplay then moves on to the post-Civil War era and the US expansion in the West.
