"My first job as a filmmaker is to not make a boring film. I don't see a conflict between art and commerce, but I do see one between boredom and commerce." Director Susanne Bier
Susanne Bier directed "Love Is All You Need", which I reviewed this week. Bier graduated from the Danish School of Film (in Copenhagen) in 1987. She has had a successful career, with two Oscar nominations and one win. Her most recent release in the US, "Serena", starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence was not a hit with audiences or critics, however. The film had a difficult start, with Bier replacing director Darren Aronofsky. "Serena" then spent many months in post-production before it was finally released. "Love Is All You Need" is a better example of her work, which is why I chose to review it.
This past Friday (June 26th), The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences invited 332 film professionals to become its newest members. Andrey Zvyagintsev was among those invited to join. (He directed and co-wrote "Leviathan", which I reviewed last week.) Also included on the list are actors Benedict Cumberbatch, David Oyelowo, Dev Patel, Eddie Redmayne, Emma Stone and Elizabeth Banks. Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs stated she is very happy with the list and the diversity it represents. Boone Isaacs is the third woman and the first African-American to head the organization.
