"Luckily, not everything I did was rubbish for money. I have had some great moments." -Actor Omar Sharif on his career in film

Omar Sharif died on Friday, July 10th in Cairo at the age of 83. The films "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Doctor Zhivago" are the most frequently mentioned regarding his career. One of my favorites, however, is the suspense/drama "Juggernaut" (1974). Sharif plays the captain of a luxury cruise ship who learns that a terrorist has planted a number of bombs on board. I like this film because the director and writer allow the audience some room for imagination. For instance, we never learn anything about the background of Sharif's character. His relationship with a female passenger is also never explained. Is he married? You have to work these things out for yourself.

Another gem is "Monsieur Ibrahim" (2003). Sharif won a number of awards for his portrayal of a Muslim shopkeeper who befriends a young Jewish boy. What is wonderful about the DVD release, as well, is Sharif's commentary. He not only talks about the film, but about his life and career. He reminisces about meeting Glenn Ford, knowing Bridget Bardot, and the general good time everyone had in the 1960s. It is the most enjoyable actor commentary I have heard, to this point.

Now onto this week's review. In June, I went to see "The Connection", the latest release from French actor Jean Dujardin. I was disappointed in the film, though. Cedric Jimenez's direction was surprisingly flat and there was very little dramatic momentum to the film. So I decided to review "Mobius", which although it did not receive a theatrical release in the US, is actually a much better film than "The Connection".

Mobius Film Review
"Mobius" is a contemporary love story wrapped in a cloak of international espionage. Partly inspired by Hitchcock's "Notorious", the film stars Jean Dujardin, Cecile De France and Tim Roth.
