I'm currently reading "The Lucifer Effect: Understanding How Good People Turn Evil" by Philip Zimbardo. A social psychologist, Zimbardo stresses the situational and systemic forces that act destructively on human behavior. He was the designer of the Stanford Prison Experiment and the subject of a film by the same name (I posted a review on the Drama Movies Site).

Lucia Puenzo's film, "The German Doctor", examines evil of a different sort. Josef Mengele, a Nazi officer assigned to the Auschwitz concentration camp, did not stop perpetrating evil acts when removed from that horrific environment. Mengele continued his "experiments" long after WWII ended. Puenzo researched Mengele and the time he spent in her native Argentina. She used the material for a novel and then developed it for the screen.
