“The mainstream audience has to know what a film wants them to think. I don’t do that. People should have their own movie in their head.” Filmmaker Matteo Garrone
Regular readers of the Drama Movies Site will have noticed that I have a special interest in crime dramas. I also read a great deal of crime fiction, including the work of Italian writer Massimo Carlotto. Carlotto is often cited as one of the practitioners of Mediterranean Noir. His book "Poisonville", co-written with Marco Videtta, covers some of the same territory as Garrone's "Gomorrah". The illegal disposal of toxic waste and the illicit capital it generates provides material for both stories.
"Gomorrah" has also been turned into a successful television series. Roberto Saviano, who wrote the book upon which the movie and series are based, is currently developing a limited series that will explore the life of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. Saviano has paid a price for his successful career, however. Due to continual death threats, he is accompanied at all times by five armed bodyguards. Saviano, who was born in Naples, does not just focus on corruption in his home country. He recently called Britain the most corrupt country in Europe, due to its role facilitating money laundering and tax evasion.

Gomorrah Film Review
"Gomorrah" has been called the "anti-Godfather" for its stark, unromantic depiction of organized crime. Based on the bestselling book by Roberto Saviano, "Gomorrah" is a fascinating and chilling vision of a society on the brink.
