February 1 2014 Editor Assistance Newsletter
This is an important note. Please read!
We have a "troublemaker" causing issues in our editor logon area. They aren't a hacker - they aren't actually trying to get into sites. Instead, they're working their way through the logon page's site list, entering fake passwords, and causing sites to get pulled off the listing so editors can't log in any more. They apparently know that, if they use an incorrect password a few times, we remove the site name from the list for security reasons so a hacker can't keep trying to get in. This person is just using the same password like "xxxxxxxxxxxx" so it's not that they're trying to get in. They're just trying to cause trouble for the editors.
The person's IP address traces to Mexico.
I have blocked the IP address from our systems. However, the person could just move to another computer and start doing it again. So I've changed the actual URL we use as a logon page. That way the person no longer knows how to get to our logon page. We don't list that URL anywhere. It seems likely the person might be an ex-editor to even have known the URL to begin with (or knew an ex-editor).
Please take a moment to log into your site fresh with this new URL:
Then please email me to let me know you're able to get in with that logon. That way I know everyone is set with the new logon and is able to access their site. Please bookmark this new URL for use going forward.
I apologize for the disruption over the past two days as this took place. Hopefully with this change we will be set going forward.
Please let me know if you have any questions!
