Archive by Date | Archive by Article Title Patience We have developed into a society that believes that anything can be accomplished overnight and we don't have to wait for any solutions. Instant everything. I have come to realize that one of my tasks as a coach is to teach people patience. Analyzing The Lane In Four Shots So how can I ignore it when he asks me to write an article about lining up quickly before league starts. Well, Perry, here's the "Choc-List" for lining up during league practice: (This technique is from the USBC Bronze Coaching Certification Seminar.) Can You Be A Professional Bowler? Can you become a professional bowler? Do you have what it takes to survive on the Professional Bowler's Tour (PBA)? Are you able to maintain the level of talent, skill, knowledge, and mindset necessary to be called, "winner," on the PBA. Success In Bowling What is success? Is it being a high average bowler? Is it being a great junior bowling coach? Is it being a PBA member and appearing on television? Me, I define success as being looked up to and respected at the level of life you are at; but, having a dream that aspires to more. Variety In Bowling Balls As you get ready to add to your arsenal, keep in mind that you need a variety of ball types to expand your ability under differing lane conditions. Going with all aggressive cover stocks, all dull finishes, or all the same weight blocks would not be the correct choice of options. Coming Back To Bowling In summary, he is stuck in the '70's and believes that his old knowledge and approach to the game will be enough to get him through. In summary, he is very wrong. Not Enough Time Exercises Like many things that are good for us, we know what needs to be done; however, we are too busy going about our daily life to get involved with a scheduled 1 to 2 hour discipline. It's the old "not enough time" excuse. Attitude, Control, Accuracy, Consistency To be a great bowler, you do not have to copy the way other bowlers throw their ball; what you need to copy is their "Ack-Ack;" (A-C-A-C) - Attitude, Control, Accuracy, and Consistency. Being In The Zone Trying to recapture the time that you were in "The Zone" is a futile effort. You can't practice being in "The Zone." You can only hone your style of bowling so that those times occur more often than the next person. The USBC Nationals I did have a game plan but didn't execute well averaging 186 for the nine games. Like thousands of bowlers, if we get to bowl on those conditions often enough, we would average what we normally do at our home houses.
