Superbowl Sandwich Recipe

The Superbowl is a great time to plan a get-together for family and friends, and except for a good television set, food is the most important element! This fabulous Superbowl Sandwich, which serves 8-10 hungry football fans, can be put together in minutes. All of the components to this eye-catching sandwich can be made ahead, so that the cook can enjoy the party as well.

If you have an automatic bread machine, the bun for this sandwich can be made in minimal hands-on time. Shaping is easy, and the result is lots of fun! Since day-old bread isn’t very good, it’s best to make the bun for this sandwich on Superbowl morning. You can be doing other things while the dough cycle is running. The Roasted Garlic Mayonnaise is quick to make, especially when the microwave is used to roast the garlic; this mayonnaise will keep a month or so in the fridge. The Marinated Tomatoes can be made the night before.

There are two options for the bun: 1) shape a free-form football on a baking sheet; this method can produce a fairly thin bun, which is ideal for splitting horizontally, and there isn’t too much bread, or 2) purchase a football pan from the craft store; Wilton makes a great cake pan in the shape of a football and it makes a perfectly shaped large bun. If you choose this option, you may want to make the sandwich in three layers, since the bun comes out quite thick.

Of course, if you are really short on time, you can use a loaf of freshly baked Crusty French Bread from your local bakery. Whichever option you choose, the results will be delicious!

12 Servings

Dough for the bun:
1 1/2 cups warm water
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
3 1/2 cups flour
1 tablespoon yeast

Fillings:
1 cup Roasted Garlic Mayonnaise (link below)
1/2 pound thinly sliced havarti cheese
1/2 pound thinly sliced ham
1/2 pound thinly sliced turkey
1/2 pound thinly sliced roast beef
Marinated tomatoes (link below)
1 head romaine lettuce, washed and dried

Place the dough ingredients into the pan of an automatic bread machine. Set the machine to the dough setting. When the cycle is finished, dump the dough onto a lightly floured pastry cloth or surface. Pat the dough into the shape of a football, about 14 inches long by 8 inches wide. Pinch the ends to a point. Transfer the football to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover loosely with a towel and let rise until doubled in bulk.

With a sharp razor or knife slash the dough about 1/4-1/3 inch deep to resemble a football (see photo). Spray with water.

Bake in a preheated 400° oven for 25-30 minutes or until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped. Let cool thoroughly.

Assembly: Slice the cooled loaf horizontally. Spread each of the slices with roasted garlic mayonnaise. Place the bottom of the bun on a serving tray; top with the havarti cheese, then ham, then turkey, then roast beef. Arrange the tomatoes over the meats, then top with lettuce. Place the top bun over all and press down. Cut into slices to serve.
