Well Water For the Aquarium

The use of well water versus tap water in aquariums has its up side and its down side. Well water around the country varies and so you do have to get it tested. Thatís a good place to start in order to evaluate the viability of using your own specific well water for a fish tank. Depending on the region in which you live, there are different kinds of minerals and gases dissolved in your well water.

The up side of well water for aquariums is that it does not contain chlorine nor does it have chloramines in it as does city tap water. Therefore, you do not have to deal with trying to get rid of those two chemicals to protect your fish.

Well water can be hard water because of the various amounts and types of minerals dissolved in it. This will depend on where you live, so you have to test the water for hardness using a water test kit or have it done professionally. The high mineral content of well water will have an effect on your efforts to adjust the pH.

You have to remove the minerals in order for the pH adjusters to work. One way to do this is through reverse osmosis. It will make your water clean and pure as it acts as a filtration system.
