Five Creative Enrichment Activities

Guest Author - Alissa Moy

Enjoy these five creative ideas for enrichment activities with your elementary homeschooler!

1. "Scrunched Collage"- Your homeschooled children will have a blast creating a collage made from scrunched paper of all types. First, gather a wide variety of paper, from construction paper to tin foil to wax paper. Cut the various paper pieces into squares so they will be easy for the children to manipulate. Next, provide the children with a large sheet of card stock to create their collage on. Encourage the artists to listen to how each paper scrunches and the particular way it sounds. Students can make a creative collage, either a specific shape or object using the various scrunched paper or just a free for all collage.

2."Stop and Smell the Roses"- Create an art project while exploring the sense of smell. First, draw or trace and cut out pictures of a variety of flowers. In the center of each flower, glue a cotton ball or small circle of fabric dipped in aromatic oil or extract. Children will create a garden picture while identifying these scents. Encourage children to describe their garden and flowers, allowing a large enough piece of paper for them to write adjectives to describe the way the flowers smell. Students can also write descriptive words on butterfly cutouts and glue them around the flowers. Don't forget to describe why butterflies are attracted to certain flowers, as well as other insects, based on the scent of the flowers.

3. "I Scream for Ice Cream"- You are the new chef at an ice cream shop! Invent a tasty flavor everyone will love. Draw your edible creation and write a few adjectives to describe the flavor combination. Consider allowing your homeschooler to create this flavor for real at home and taste the results for yourself!

4. "Nature Hunt & Draw"- Take a walk outside as a family and gather five items from nature. Write the names of these items and draw their pictures. Be sure to notice the details when drawing your nature finds, like the lines on a leaf.

5."Alphabet Soup"- List and draw foods that begin with ten different letters in the alphabet. For example, A could be an apple, H could be a hamburger. Choose letters randomly. Place all the letters of the alphabet on index cards with your child. Then shuffle the cards and have them choose ten from a face down pile. This is also a great brainstorming activity.

Here are some fun resources you can obtain to use alongside any of the activities above:
