Death in the 12th House Review

Astrologer David Lowell runs the successful Starlight Detective Agency based in Manhattan with the help of his staff. They include Sarah, his assistant, Mort, a psychic and master hacker, and Andy, his driver and bodyguard. Lowell uses his incredible knowledge of astrology to solve cases for his clients.

In this latest case, someone is knocking off famous rockers who are no longer at the top of their game. After the most recent killing of Freddie Finger, lead singer for the multi-platinum Rocket Fire, Freddie’s daughter, movie actress Vivian Younger, hires Lowell to find out who is responsible for the murders. She is also hoping that the detective can bring the killings to a stop before anyone dies. Lowell even becomes involved with the victim’s daughter in a side story that brings a sweet romance into the story.

As the astrologer starts looking into Freddie’s murder, he finds any number of suspects including ex-wives, angry band members, a greedy manager, and a musician from years ago that is still holding a grudge. Lowell gathers the information he needs through numerous birth charts and wisely sifts through the growing number of clues until he discovers the unexpected truth to the killings.

Mitchell Scott Lewis is the author of Death in the 12th House: Where Neptune Rules. His first David Lowell novel, Murder in the 11th House, was well received, and hopefully the series will continue.

It’s fun to see how Lowell uses the charts to learn the personality traits of those who are suspects and the people the detective wants to rule out. Even readers who know little or nothing about astrology will be able to follow the storyline.

The staff he has surrounded himself with comes across as hardworking, respectful, and loyal. We get to know them and can easily see why the agency is successful. The fast-pace story and numerous suspects will keep readers guessing as to who is killing off the rockers. The characters are well developed and the plot holds the readers interest.

New York City, especially Manhattan, is a great backdrop to this story, and the author uses it wisely.
