Kuroko no Basuke Season Two Episode Eight Recap
The episode opens with Kagami’s question about why Kiyoshi said that this year is the only year he can play basketball. The scene switches to the end of the one-on-one between Kiyoshi and Hyuuga and Kiyoshi tells Hyuuga that he’s done following him around.
Kiyoshi and the few people he’s recruited to join the Seirin High Basketball Club gather on the rooftop of the school. The morning assembly, taking place on the ground below, is the place he’s chosen in order to showcase his determination to make the Seirin High Basketball team a success. He shouts “We swear an oath! We, the basketball team, will participate in this year’s national tournament to become the best team in Japan!”
Kiyoshi, Izuki, Koganei, and Mitobe all state their class and name, though Koganei shouts Mitobe’s information because Mitobe doesn’t speak. The four are convinced that Hyuuga isn’t going to show up when the door to the roof is thrown open to announce Hyuuga’s arrival. Hyuuga tells Kiyoshi that there’s a world of difference between an ordinary man and a prodigy and that he hates Kiyoshi. Because of that, Hyuuga doesn’t want to lose to Kiyoshi in the sport he loves. Kiyoshi acknowledges the challenge and Hyuuga adds his name to the list of those who have sworn the oath to make the team the best in Japan.
Aida Riko is watching and is astonished when Hyuuga announces his intentions. When they get busted by the teachers, Hyuuga yells that he will either fulfill the oath or confess his feelings buck naked from the roof. Riko bursts out laughing, calls him an idiot, and decides that she will become the coach for the Seirin High Basketball Team (In the previous episode, she turned Kiyoshi down due to her hatred of watching middle school teams give up on winning against Teiko).
The guys gather for their first practice and when Kiyoshi is referred to as Captain, he defers the title to Hyuuga by telling him that he has the quality of a leader, an ability that Kiyoshi himself doesn’t possess. After some protesting, Hyuuga accepts the title and they began to train.
They start playing against other schools and win the majority of their games. Their opponent before the championship league is Kirisaki Daichi. Near the end of the game, Hanamiya (from Daichi) enters. During a rebound, he gives a signal to another team member, who lands hard on Kiyoshi’s knee. Kiyoshi has to be carried off the court on a stretcher. When the team goes to visit Kiyoshi in the hospital, he lies and tells them he’ll be better by the championship game.
But when alone with Hyuuga, Kiyoshi tells the truth. He needs surgery and rehabilitation. He decides to skip the surgery and just do the rehabilitation, but it still means that he will have to take a year off before he can play again. And when he comes back, he’ll only be able to play for a single year.
Hyuuga concludes the story by telling Kagami and Kuroko that after the Seirin Basketball Team lost Kiyoshi, they were crushed in the championship league by the three kings.
