Motion 5 Video Training from macProVideo

What can Apple Motion do is a big question. To get started, you can view this free video training by macProVideo. Michael Wohl is your trainer for Motion 5 101 Overview and Workflow Guide, which is a sampling of the videos from the comprehensive training course available by subscription.

As the title suggests, Wohl gives you a short overview of what you can do in AppleR MotionR 5. He begins with a tour of the software interface and discusses the purpose for each pane in the workspace. He demonstrates how to use the content specific HUD pane, which is a floating pane containing parameter controls for the selected object on the main canvas. Next, he introduces the Project pane and how it is used to organize your project, via the Layers, Audio and Media tabs. He also discusses layer hierarchy. Moving on to the Timeline, he discusses how each object on the canvas is represented in the timeline.

With the workspace covered, Wohl moves on to the Project Browser and how to create a new project. He demonstrates the basic tools for drawing shapes, Bezier curves, painting and text and discusses the HUD controls for editing the parameters for each type of object. After learning the basics of adding objects to the canvas, Wohl covers how to use the transformation tools in Motion to move, rotate and scale the objects. You will especially like the tool for rounding corners as well as smoothing curved lines.

Next, Wohl goes into more depth as he discusses how to use the controls on the Layers tab to set the hierarchy order and to group objects. He then introduces the types of timelines including the video, audio and keyframe editor. He moves on to importing objects into the project and how to control the position of the new object in the layer hierarchy.

One of the most powerful features of Motion is the library of built-in elements and Wohl discusses the Generators, Replicators and Particles groups. He demonstrates how to use the Inspector to control the parameters for each.

The Motion behaviors are another powerful feature that Wohl discusses and he demonstrates how to use the Simulation behaviors to animate an object on the canvas. He shows how to use the HUD to make fine adjustments to these built-in behaviors. Although these behaviors are easy to use, there are times when you will need to create frame-by-frame animation and Wohl demonstrates how to use the Record button to set beginning and ending parameters for this type of animation.

Finally, Wohl discusses the various ways to export your project including as a QuickTime movie and directly to Facebook. He also discusses exporting your project as a Final Cut Pro template.

These free samples are available on the website as well as apps for the mac and iOS devices.
