Dreaming in English - A Review

Guest Author - Dominique Jordan

“Dreaming in English” is an inspirational, funny, and gripping novel about the endeavor of Tamila Soroush, an Iranian woman who comes to America in the hopes of gaining citizenship, and her continuing experience as a newly married woman and an adventurer in a land she desperately loves.

The first novel detailing Tamila Soroush's journey, “Veil of Roses,” tells the story of Tamila’s adventure from the confining surroundings of Iran into the mesmerizing satisfactions of freedom in America. This is where she first meets Ike and really examines the differences that exist between her home in Iran and the United States.

The sequel to her novel “Veil of Roses,” Laura Fitzgerald’s “Dreaming in English” is a story that both inspires and informs. Filled with realistic and unforgettable characters, “Dreaming in English” is a novel you'll want to read over and over again.

WHAT”S IT ABOUT?

“Dreaming in English” is the continuing first-person account of Tamila Soroush as she expresses in vivid and exquisite detail her life as a newlywed with her American husband Ike Hanson and the obstacles she endures in order to gain citizenship in America. With her new husband, Tami is ready to start her new life. However, not everyone is content with Ike and Tami’s marriage.

As she sets to embark on a new phase of life with her husband, she encounters obstacles regarding her own insecurities, immigration, and even the disapproval of Ike’s parents. Tamila’s emotional encounter with freedom in America and her loving relationship with her new husband Ike is one that will move you and surely leave an indelible footprint on your heart.

WHO IS IT FOR?

This novel is for anyone who has ever wondered what it's like to walk in the shoes of someone who has not enjoyed the liberties that most Americans take for granted. Teenagers will delight in reading about Tamila’s journey as she struggles to find her place in American society and deepen her relationship with her husband Ike. There is a bit of profanity in the novel, but the use of language is used as a powerful tool to evoke the emotions certain characters in are feeling at a particular moment.

Tamila’s determination for acceptance and understanding is something that every teen can relate to. The thoughts, intentions, and actions of every character in the novel are ones that are reflected every day in every person.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS?

I would absolutely recommend this book, as well as its predecessor “Veil of Roses.” It’s a great book about a phenomenal subject-- freedom.
