Photoshop CC What's New

Photographers and digital artists have several new features introduced with the AdobeR Creative CloudTM PhotoshopR CC upgrade. One anticipated feature is the new Upsampling which converts a low resolution image to a higher resolution. One of the most used features has been improved with the new Smart Sharpen process. Also, we have improvements in the performance of the Blur and Liquify tools and a new Camera Shake Reduction process. You can even do more with video.

I personally have found the increased control given to the artist with the Smart Sharpen feature very useful since it was added to Photoshop a few years ago. As you know, you can only sharpen an image so far before you begin to see noise and halos appear. The Smart Sharpen panel controls gave us better results than an all-over sharpening effect applied to the photo. Now, with the improvements to Smart Sharpen we have even more control over the sharpening process with the new Reduce Noise slider control.

My favorite new feature is the Upsampling process which allows the artist to increase the size of an image without the loss of quality. Before now, this option was not available within Photoshop. As many of our readers know, BellaOnline has a literary magazine called MUSED. We get many artwork submissions that are just too small for publication because the image would be thumbnail size in the PDF print version of the magazine. Now, with the new Preserve Details and other options in the new Resample menu in the Image Size dialog box, many of these artists may be able to increase the size of their photo before submission while maintaining quality.

Another common problem we see with the photographic submissions to MUSED is blur and distortion due to a shaky camera. Photoshop’s new Camera Shake Reduction feature may be a problem solver for these artists as they can correct this problem before submitting their photo. This new feature is very interactive in that the artist can assign several Blur Detection regions. Photoshop uses these assigned regions of the photo to calculate the correction process. Also, these detection areas can be repositioned as needed for the best results.
