Motion 5 Masking Technique - Finish

Motion 5 Masking Technique - Finish
In this MotionR tutorial, we will finish the craft logo reveal by adding the tagline to the end of the video. For this craft company, the tagline is made up from three words that tell the customers what they will find if they visit the online store.

The tagline is "SVG Cut Files * Digital Stamps * Inspiration". As you can see, we have a * between each word in the tagline. For the animation, we will fade each word onto the Canvas, one at a time. Each fade in animation will take one second on the Timeline.

At this point, the masked animation that reveals the company name ends at the 5 seconds spot on the Timeline. Let's wait a second and then start the fade in animation of the first word. This will start at the 6 seconds spot on the Timeline. Each fade in will take 1 second and start immediately after the one before it ends.

Our first step is to add the tagline to the Canvas, style the text and get the placement correct. Then we can start making the words disappear and reappear. Because we will animate each word individually, we will need to place each word on its own layer in the Layers pane. Let’s start a new group for this part of the video.

What about that * ? Well, it’s just another text object with 4 empty spaces before the word. We will have two of these, before the second and third words.

  1. Open your project into Motion and add a new layer named "Tagline".

  2. Place the Playhead at 6 seconds on the Timeline. Add the first word of the tagline.

  3. Repeat the previous step for the second and third words. Place the second word at 7 seconds and the third word at 8 seconds on the Timeline. Position the words on the Canvas as needed for your design. When you set the Style for the word in the Inspector, use the Baseline slider to move the * to the vertical center of the word.

    6 - SVG Cut Files
    7 *     Digital Stamps
    8 *     Inspiration

We want to fade in the first word over one second on the Timeline. So the animation will begin with the word’s Opacity set to 0% and end at 7 seconds on the Timeline, with the Opacity set to 100%.

  4. Select the first word. Place the Playhead at 6 seconds and click the Record button to record the Opacity value at the beginning of the animation. Set the Opacity for the word to 0% in the Properties tab of the Inspector.

  5. Move the Playhead to 7 seconds and set the Opacity back to 100%. Click the Record button to stop recording Keyframe.

In order for the * and the word to animate as one, we need to put them into a group.

  6. Select the second word and its *. Right-click and choose Group from the menu. Name the group "Digital Stamps". With the Playhead still at 7 seconds, select the group in the Layers panel and repeat the previous step, setting the Opacity to 0% at 7 seconds and back to 100% at 8 seconds.

  7. Select the third word. The Playhead should now be at 8 seconds on the Timeline. Repeat again.

At this point, we can save the completed logo reveal in the .motn format, so that we can use it for each product trailer for 2014. What about background music. You have two choices. You can add a music clip to this .motn file that will last the duration of the logo reveal and then change music when the product trailer begins. Another is to begin the background music that you have chosen for the product trailer at the beginning of the logo reveal and continue through the duration of the product trailer.
