New Year's Evolution

You know that a healthier body will improve your fertility. You also know that better health will help you cope with the emotional strain of infertility. But even your best laid plans never seem to amount to real change. You don't need New Year's Resolutions--you need personal evolution.

Real change requires more than willpower. Lasting change comes from changing your environment so it helps support you in changing. The fact is, the habits you have are supported by your current environment. If you simply tell yourself you'll change it won't happen. All of your good intentions will be lost in day-to-day life if you don't have a system to make it happen.

The majority of New Years Resolutions are forgotten in just a few weeks. I don't know how many times my goals, tests, or resolutions read: “Lose 20 lbs,” “Lose Weight,” “Exercise Daily.” Over and over again I wrote out my goal. Each time I failed to achieve my goals. It was not until I learned *how* to lose weight and then changed my environment to support my plan that things began to change. By working with a life coach I learned how to set up my personal environment to make the changes stick.

Take the time to plan how you will make the needed changes. What in your environment is helping you? What is holding you back? If you are living with someone whose habits and lifestyle affect yours--you will find that you are usually more successful if you can get them to buy into your plan.

For instance--I had a goal of exercising every day. My life was just so busy it never happened. To create an enviroment to support my new habit I had to think through what was stopping me. The first problem was that exercise took time I did not want to give up from other activites. I had to give myself permission to let go of some activities that were less important. I also needed to delegate some of my responsibilities to others. I needed to make exercise as easy as possible. Finally I needed to convince myself that exercise was a top priority. If something else needed to suffer from neglect so be it. I was simply not going to neglect my body in favor of those other activities anymore.
